During Nicolas Cage’s VOD days he took a lot of experimental risks. Like Willy’s Wonderland where he doesn’t talk and fights killer pizza parlor robots. Willy’s Wonderland delivers the goods, though in a low budget way. There’s no real choreography. It’s more just wailing on them in quick cut close-ups, but he does use different weapons to dispatch each one
Now on 4K UHD from Shout! Studios, Willy’s Wonderland has a sharp, sleek widescreen picture. Leather-clas Cage practically glows.
Even in the dark, shadows don’t get completely black. We can probably thank digital for that, though the robot blood is a gooey, oily black. But, the colors of the animatronics and the pinball machine, some of the themed rooms, and of course the ball pit pop.
There are some rear sound accents like robots circling and speaking and singing the birthday song but it’s mostly a front mix.
Cage gives his always intriguing take on the film in a 7-minute “Inside the Fun” feature. Other bonus features are quick in two minutes or less but let you see a bit of the green clad puppeteers behind the animatronics.
