I never saw The Descent: Part 2 so now it is a quaint discovery of their attempt to franchise the original. It picks up right when Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) escaped the caves. Giving her amnesia is weird but since they want her to go back into the caves, she’d never agree if she had her memory.
So Sarah leads another group back into the caves. They didn’t make 3-7 more Descent sequels so it’s fun to go back once. The monsters show up much sooner and they come up with more precarious cave scenarios.
I like the new character Cath (Anna Skellern), who went in with the best intentions and the people she trusted withheld important information. Sarah becomes her old self again in the caves too. Some surprise survivors from the first film turn up too.
The 4K UHD looks great because they shot the sequel for theaters even though it ended up going straight to video. So it opens on beautiful landscapes and then goes deep into the caves full of pure black darkness.
Jump scares and monster screams use the surround channels. Gunshots, cave ins and tossing flares are other effective uses of surround sound.
Macdonald gives a new interview looking back on the sequel, particularly the crawler actors being funny between takes, and some deleted scenes that weren’t even included in the legacy extras. New cast member Krysten Cummings also gives an interview which backs up some of Macdonald’s tales, particularly the crawler ones.
