Remember what a big deal the Swingers reunion was. This was five years later, they were a little more grown up, doing a crime caper that involved more than meeting women. They never did another two-hander together but Favreau appeared in Vaughn’s comedies The Breakup, Four Christmases and Couples Retreat, and of course directed bigger and bigger films.
Made is fun. A basic mob mission in New York is complicated by the fact that Ricky (Vaughn) questions every basic thing, but Bobby (Favreau) tolerates him. Perhaps showing how offensive Ricky is to women helps illustrate what a fine line Vaughn walked in Swingers to make Trent endearing.
The 4K UHD shows the 35 mm grain of Favreau’s directorial debut. The New York streets have some good deep night sky over the streets, especially behind the glowing Times Square. Even the back of their limo is shrouded in shadow.
The L.A. bookends are bright by contrast, on a construction site, Hollywood High School and Color Me Mine.
A Dolby Atmos mix gives Ricky and Bobby a full surround audience for their opening boxing match. Motorcycles on the Harlem street corner approach from all sides.
Made has most of the original bonus features. They did not retain the telestrator commentary. There must be no way to port that onto a 4K. It’s also nice that Peter Falk is in those original interviews.
