This year’s Wuthering Heights adaptation was an engaging, relatable telling of the classic. Modernized enough via music and sexuality, the volatile romance now comes home in vivid 4K up close in your living room.
Indeed, the film is built around closeups of beautiful people. Those closeups can be haunting, painful, bitter and all the qualities of Bronte. The shadow in rooms with no electricity highlights the 4K high dynamic range, even in candlelight or the fireplace. Then, Edgar’s (Shazad Latif) manor boasts vibrant colors to contrast Wuthering Heights itself.
The intense music by Charli xcx resonates in the surround sound mix.
Three behind-the-scenes features delve into the costumes, the adaptation, and production. I wouldn’t have known the costumes were anachronistic. They look historical to me, so this adds depth to the wardrobe we’re watching Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi wear. They and costars Hong Chau and department heads also speak from the set.
Writer/director Emerald Fennell gives a full audio commentary and gets specific. She’s very detailed in her execution so each scene has subtle aspects you really may not notice until she points them out. The use of hair becomes a big deal, not just in the title screen animation, but Elordi and Robbie’s locks end up in other parts of the set too.
