Variety is reporting that Paramount Pictures has hired screenwriter Jonathan Lemkin to pen the script for G.I. Joe 3.
Lemkin’s writing credits include Shooter, Red Planet, Lethal Weapon 4, and The Devil’s Advocate. G.I. Joe 3‘s storyline is said to focus heavily on Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s character, Roadblock, who was a key character in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Paramount Pictures is expecting to start filming G.I. Joe 3 next year so it can be ready to open in theaters by the summer of 2016. Originally Jon Chu was set to direct the film but he opted out to focus on the Jem and the Holograms film adaptation he’s working on. Dwayne Johnson and Adrianne Palicki are expected to return for the threequel, as well as Transformers/G.I. Joe’s producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura who previously collaborated with Lemkin on Shooter and Lethal Weapon 4.
