Why I Hate “Call of Duty”

Mouse here with why I “Hate Call of Duty.”

Last year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) released to record numbers. People flocked to game retail stores just to get this new iteration of Modern Warfare; apparently this one has better “bullet drop physics” than the last game.

Big eff’n deal.

Don’t get me wrong, I like a good game. I’ll pick up a Mass Effect 2 or a Limbo (on Xbox Live Arcade) or even buy credits for Riot’s League of Legends; they certainly deserve the support. It’s my job as the Game Art Professor to actively research and know what’s good and what’s bad out there.

But Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3? Horrible. I’ll tell you why.

More of the same.

What is so different about Modern Warfare 3 that is different than the other Call of Duty games before it? NOTHING! Maybe a new story and maybe a new polish on the same piece of crap Activision has been serving for the last half a decade, but it’s still the SAME PIECE OF CRAP! I can summarize Modern Warfare 3 in 2 statements:

1)     Recycled war story in single player.

2)     Kids that cuss so much it makes sailors cry in Online Multiplayer

Beyond that, there’s nothing new. I thought games were supposed to be about innovation. Unfortunately, people are lemmings and will follow those that dangle carrots in front of their faces.

Not even built by the original designers.

Here’s something most people don’t know: MW3 was NOT made by the same people that made MW1 and MW2. The two senior employees were FIRED from Activision.

Yup!

It was for “breaches of contract and insubordination.”  Accusations that are, of course, “easily provable” in a court of law (/sarcasm).

Let’s lay down a couple of facts, shall we?

Activision published the title, Infinity Ward developed the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released on November 10th, 2009.

It’s the second best selling game of all time.

Jason West and Vince Zampella (the two senior employees at Infinity Ward) were fired in March of 2010, 4 months after the game released.

Funny timing from Activision, huh?

Since Activision “published” the title, they continued to collect profits from MW2, profits that, obviously, should have gone to Infinity Ward.

It’s like creating a piece of art, selling it, only to get kicked out of the museum it’s in, receiving NONE of the money.

Now that’s…eff’d up.

MW3 was whore’d out to weenie developers

Activision had a problem. As soon as West and Zampella left, most of Infinity Ward left with them in defiance to Activision; ironically, they defected to EA and formed a studio called “Respawn Entertainment.”

So they did what any “good” studio would have done…give the title to studios that have NEVER touched the title.

Modern Warfare 3 was developed by:

-Infinity Ward (or what was left of it)

-Sledgehammer Games

-Raven Software

-Treyarch

-Neversoft (yes, the Guitar Hero guys)

That’s five parties trying to make one cake. That’s way too many in my opinion.

Unfortunately, Activision is the same company that “took” the Guitar Hero license from Harmonix (that went on to develop the Rock Band games) and saturated the market with so many horrible underdeveloped Guitar Hero knock-offs that people got sick of them.

Activision has since stopped supporting the “Hero” line of games.

What’s sad is that this is looking like the fate of Call of Duty.

So play Call of Duty as much as you can now…it may not be there in a few years.
