Before The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Jimmy Wang Yu was the guy with the dragon tattoo. I’m not quite as versed in Wang Yu as other martial artists so I’m grateful to Eureka for putting out these movies to help me fill in the gaps.
The beautiful transfer gets a hell of an introduction as the Dragon locates bandits in a beautiful temple and ruins to collect what was stolen from him. There is plenty of fighting and training as the Dragon teaches a family who helps him.
The most surprising subplot is about gambling. Ah-Kun (Lee Quin) gambles the deed to his family’s house, and his wife and children’s reaction is way darker than you’d expect.
Eureka recorded two commentaries from our usual experts. Frank Djeng and Michael Worth share many behind the scenes stories and career stories of the performers. Mike Leeder and Arne Venema give the more playful one though they still include wild, scathing anecdotes.
