“THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM”… YES, THAT’S A THING.

Now, is this a film that we didn’t know we needed, OR a film we don’t need?  I guess we’ll find out in 2027….

Because it is almost time to return to Middle-earth. Pre-production for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is in progress, with the latest sequel in  The Lord of the Rings-franchise hitting theaters on December 17, 2027. The Andy Serkis-helmed project sees the return of Serkis as the titular Gollum, along with Gandalf and Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood.

And that being said, it is unclear at this time who else might make it back to Middle Earth. But I’ll keep you posted.

  • Timeline: This story takes place in the 17-year gap between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Specifically, it covers the period after Bilbo’s 111th birthday party but before the Fellowship enters the Mines of Moria.
  • Core Plot: The story explores an “untold chapter” of Middle-earth where Gandalf and Aragorn(Strider) quest to find and capture Gollum. Their goal is to prevent Sauron from extracting the One Ring’s location from him. (A new actor will play this younger version of Aragon)
  • Themes: Producer Peter Jackson has stated the film will be a “psychological drama” focusing on the conflict between the Gollum and Sméagol personalities.
