One of best movies of year is now available at home. Even though winter break is essentially over, The Holdovers is still a touching movie for any time of year. Plus, it can make you nostalgic for the holidays, especially if we’re already missing them.
Director Alexander Payne admits in text cards that the deleted scenes are meager, as they stuck pretty closely to the script. His explanation of brief deleted scenes informs how they tightened the film by removing lengthy transitions.
Two sets of interviews with the cast and filmmakers each begin with platitudes about how great everyone was and how much fun they had. But stick with them both times. Once that’s out of the way, it gives each cast member, writer, director, or producer a chance to reflect on their role in the film.
The Blu-ray release looks good. It captures the ‘70s aesthetic with a saturated picture. The 4K on Peacock or VOD is actually a different experience with a sharp, smooth picture. Take your pick between the ‘70s throwback and the modern day technology.
