The Blue Jean Monster Blu-ray Review: Bringing Category III Back to Life

1 min read

The Blue Jean Monster is a new one to me. If there’s a Hong Kong movie I haven’t seen, I want to, and this crazy Category III extravaganza from 88 Films didn’t disappoint.

Shing Fui-On plays Joe, a cop killed in the line of duty. He comes back as a zombie to finish his case and be there for the birth of his son.

There are plenty of Hong Kong style cop movie shootouts, but where Blue Jean earns its Category III title is how gross Joe’s injuries are. He pasts cookie dough over gaping wounds, but the Cat III shenanigans aren’t limited to his zombie body. Amy Yip’s cameo is fittingly tasteless but she’s game.

For this movie, the only interview they got was assistant director Sam Long. He discusses objections to the Category III label, the influence of Dead Heat and his own career. Joe’s upkeep of his dead body is also reminiscent of Death Becomes Her which wouldn’t come out for another year in Hollywood.

The new cover art and poster conveys the intensity of Shing’s undead new power.
