Superman 4K UHD Review: 4Kryptonite

Just as James Gunn announced the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, his first film hits 4K UHD as well as Blu-ray and DVD. The 4K UHD captures the bright, colorful live-action comic book approach Gunn took to the relaunch of DC Studios. That contrasts with the dark pocket dimension.

The 4K isn’t quite IMAX, but at 1.85:1, Gunn composed the whole film to be compatible with all screens. The surround sound is full of rumbles and echoes of kaiju, the Fortress of Solitude and the dimension-splitting Metropolis.

I liked the bonus features the most of any recent movie in some time. The hour-long making of documentary includes Gunn style storyboards illustrating his early experience with comics and the Richard Donner film.

It shows real discussions in the costume fittings for the suit and glasses. The craftspeople are featured along with everyone’s dogs. It shows Gunn getting complete takes so you can see the process, even the directions for different line readings and a very vulnerable moment for David Corenswet.

Shorter featurettes on the Daily Planet, Lex Luthor, the Justice Gang, Krypto, Ultra Man, the legacy, DC plans and the music elaborate on pieces from the doc. In total they add another 45 minutes.
