First revealed in the second half of 2018, Sparklite has been relatively quiet for awhile now, but returned to the spotlight with a new trailer.
Sparklite is developed by Red Blue Games and published by Merge Games. It will be available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in Fall 2019, and is clearly aimed at being a nostalgic callback to games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Sparklite‘s new gameplay trailer is reminiscent of games like Dead Cells in its polish, showcasing movement and enemy design that far exceeds the expectations one might have for a title with the graphical aesthetic that Sparklite has.
The trailer follow Ada, Sparklite‘s protagonist, as she makes her way through several examples of the world design that seems to be so crucial to how players experience the game. While some environments, especially the one with tall, dead grass, will inevitably draw out even more Legend of Zelda juxtapositions, others are uniquely tailored to Sparklite‘s story of environmental corruption and grassroots revolution. The steampunk elements are the most striking, and it’s good that they are, since that will be what separates Sparklite from other roguelites visually.
Sparklite seems poised to take a run at being one of the indie darlings of 2019, and anyone looking for a nostalgic but new spin on some of gaming’s most iconic classics will want to keep a close eye on the game as more news emerges prior to launch. You can check out the new trailer below:
