10 years ago, Sing Street was an uplifting musical tale just like John Carney’s previous Begin Again. Now we need that uplift more than ever.
Sing Street transports us to 1985 Dublin, Ireland. Young Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) forms a band to impress Raphina (Lucy Boynton). The artistic project not only brings them closer, but gives him a purpose and confidence at school. Their songs are pretty good too! The film is realistic about teenagers making VHS music videos, but we get to hear professionally produced versions on the soundtrack.
The Lionsgate Limited 4K UHD edition out tomorrow highlights the bright colors of ‘80s Dublin. Bright yellow permeates the family kitchen, Conor’s bedroom and his classroom. Even the wooden desks are tinted yellowish.
They find more lush places to make videos, like an alleyway and the green bus they ride. They wear flamboyant costumes against drab backgrounds. Conor and Raphina walk through the green park. Then it explodes in the “Drive It Like You Stole It” Prom video.
The Dolby Atmos intro works even with five speakers, so imagine the full setup The music reverberates but does not dominate the rear speakers.
A 30 minute look back includes Carney strumming and showing his song development. He also introduces his kids, who weren’t yet born 10 years ago.
Legacy bonus features includes cast auditions, in which they look even younger, and short interviews.
