Silent Night 4K UHD Review: Steelboo4k

1 min read

John Woo’s action explodes in 4K. Silent Night is a tragic story, but the presentation is exhilarating.

Silent Night is bright and sunny for the opening violence, and also dark and dingy for more violence. The lighting changes fro flashbacks to happy times are palpable.

Most of the Christmas Eve action unfolds on dark city streets or a dilapidated slum house, but the gang leader’s room is full of golden spheres that reflect Joel Kinnaman or show his thoughts of his son.

Now, there’s no dialogue in Silent Night but the soundtrack is anything but silent. There are a lot of rear surround effects of gunshots and cars vrooming and screeching.

The only bonus feature is a 16 minute behind the scenes feature but they cover a lot. Kinsman and Woo discuss the silent performance and camera movement. Woo and his collaborators discuss pre-planning the action sequences. The editor speaks a lot and the tear to bullet cut is discussed. Marco Beltrami has a lot to say about the music too.
