Prince’s landmark movie is now preserved in 4K UHD for its 40th anniversary. The highlight of the film is the club performances by not only Prince, but Morris Day and the Time and the Apollonia 6. The purple lights color the smoke brightly and you see the film grain capturing the authentic vibes of the nightlife.
But, the daytime scene in and around Minneapolis look stunning in 4K. Walking the city streets, motorcycling along the forests or bathing in the waters of not Lake Minnetonka are bright and sunny, perfectly sharp.
The sound was Dolby Stereo in 1984 and the home video mix remains faithful to that. The songs sound great in any system and the mix is full and clear.
Director Albert Magnoli gave new interviews for the film’s 35th anniversary Blu-ray so there’s nothing new since then, but those are also included. Music videos are also in standard definition from 1984.
