In a recent interview, Dean Devlin, producer of Independence Day, has finally given fans what they’ve been waiting for; news for the proposed sequel. It has been 16 years since the first movie premiered and 11 year since Devlin and Roland Emmerich, (ID4’s director) have worked together. Fox has every intention of keeping ID4 in the hearts and minds of its fans with the 3D re-release they plan to do next summer.
Devlin said, “We are working really hard to try and make this happen.” He goes on to admit that this is his second attempt to write a sequel and that his first attempt compelled him to return the money the studio had paid him.
“Many years ago, I was actually hired to write the sequel to Independence Day. And I wrote a sequel. And they paid me a boatload of money to go write this thing. And after I wrote it, I read it and I gave them back the money and I said, ‘look, this is an okay movie I just wrote. But it’s not worthy of the sequel to Independence Day.’ And I literally gave back the money. And afterwards I said, ‘You know what? I’m not even going to try anymore.’ And it was only about a year-and-a-half ago that Roland called me up and said, ‘We should try again.’”
After all these years, the Independence Day sequel has been announced. Our wait may soon be over.
