Prey 4K UHD Review: Predator Vision in 4K

Thank you for this physical release of a Hulu original. Please release more streaming exclusives on disc. Prey did stream in 4K on Hulu but it’s worth having without any buffers.

The Predator sequel boasts beautiful fields and forests, where every blade of wheat is distinct. You can see the particles floating around the forest air. The Comanches’ tribal war paint crusts on their faces.

The depth of field in Prey is distinct as focus shifts from background to foreground. Fire light inside teepees highlights the animal skin color.

Predator camouflage is very subtle in 4K. Green splashes of Predator blood glow in this setting.

At night in the forest. Nighttime in the forest gets really subtle in degrees of darkness, sometimes firelight, sometimes just the moon with pitch black pockets of shadow. When Naru and Taabe sit perched in the tree at night, it’s a gorgeous silhouette.

Surround sound effects include Naru’s axe spinning behind you, and the echo of its impact on a tree. The 4K UHD and Blu-ray also include the Comanche language track.

A 12 minute making of and 30 minute FYC panel let the filmmakers and cast discuss the making of the film, but they really go into depth in the feature length audio commentary. Dan Trachtenberg, Amber Midthunder, cinematographer Jeff Cutter and editor Angela M. Catanzaro get scene specific through the whole movie.

Even bloody leaves and torches required workarounds to pull off. Messy scenes took days because they can’t clean Midthunder and reset. Some scenes that look natural still involve unexpected CGI, and yet the crew grew actual grass for another scene.

Midthunder shares stories of her time with the cast on location, messing with them and coming clean. She also hid her phone to review the script and take pictures of the locations.

Scene specific commentary even includes scenes Trachtenberg took out, explaining how he honed the movie.

Three of those deleted scenes are included separately, including two with the Comanche tribe and a third previs animatic of a Predator treetop chase they never shot.
