The new "Pink Mercy" skin.

Overwatch’s new Mercy skin will help fund breast cancer research

Blizzard, you make me proud.

The gaming giant has teamed up with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to raise awareness via our favorite Overwatch doctor. From now until May 21st, Blizzard will offer a “Pink Mercy” skin for $15, with 100% of the profits going towards funding critical breast cancer research. The cosmetic boasts new animation effects, sounds, blonde pigtails, and features a stylish variation of Dr. Ziegler’s medical armor.

While cosmetics are typically unlocked through in-game loot boxes, the “Pink Mercy” skin cannot be unlocked for free. Rather, it works more like the Overwatch League cosmetics – purchasable skins that directly fund the corresponding group. I dislike excessive DLC, but I never imagined we would see charity events come from this.

And yes, fifteen dollars is a lot. But this is definitely for a good cause, so I can overlook it.  The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has regularly maintained an A+ rating from CharityWatch, formerly known as the American Institute of Philanthropy, and has already funded over $569 million in cancer research.

Blizzard will reveal the total donation amount at the end of the promotion.
