Michael ‘MPsy’ here…
Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer, Namor, Iron Fist, and She-Hulk (the red one) make up the new team of the Defenders. In this first issue we’re treated to the ‘lets-get-the-band-back-together’ scenario. Writer Matt Fraction (The Invincible Iron Man and The Immortal Iron Fist) introduces the key cast members of this latest incarnation of the Defenders at the request of the Hulk (who has recently separated from Bruce Banner) to deal with the fallout of ‘Fear Itself’, namely Nul the Breaker of Worlds. Faction does a great job here voicing a cast of characters one would not normally see together. My only real complaint is that some of the humor does seem a bit forced. Terry and Rachel Dodson (Uncanny X-Men and Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil that Men Do) joins Faction here on the art and does an absolute bang up job. I especially enjoyed their interpretation of Zero-G Kung-Fu (yep you heard me Zero-G Kung Fu).
This title has some real potential, especially with their tagline ‘Protecting humanity from the impossible!’. I’m just going to assume that the team will be dealing with some of the stranger (no pun intended) threats of the Marvel Universe. Personally I was hoping for a Doctor Strange stand alone title especially since losing his mantle of Sorcerer Supreme but it would be interesting to see how he deals with his current situation in a group dynamic. I’m quite excited to see what’s in store for us in issue two of ‘The Defenders’.
