I will begin by saying that I am a big fan of Eric Powell and his Goon series. Steve Niles‘ Criminal Macabre on the other hand is something I’m quite new to but the idea behind a drug using paranormal detective with an undead sidekick sounds pretty good to me. Plus I enjoyed the Goon team up with Hellboy that happened a while back. So when Dark Horse Comics released a mash up between the two titles I say ‘What the hell!’ and got me a copy.
In the end though I gotta say that I was pretty disappointed with the end result. The words awkward and confusing first comes to mind as I sat down and read the comic. While the idea of two titles which both deal with the supernatural and known for its witty writing looks great on paper and should go together like peanut butter and jelly, instead ends up like peanut butter and nacho cheese sauce. And the twist ending? Well I’m not gonna spoil it for you but even that big reveal did not score any points with me on this one. In the end I say keep them separated, let the Goon stay on Lonely Street and have Cal do his thing in LA.
