Now You See Me: Now You Don’t revived the magic franchise last year. Now it comes home in a 4K UHD with tons of bonus features. The Four Horsemen (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Isla Fisher with Lizzy Caplan as a fifth) pass the torch to a new gang of magicians (Dominic Sessa, Justice Smith and Ariana Greenblatt) as they take on a new villain (Rosamund Pike).
The international locations look great in 4K, even if they only actually filmed a few days there. There is so much formal wear, that all the tuxedos and dresses give of the deep black of high dynamic range. The river in Belgium and Abu Dhabi at night also provide a deep sky. Some of the elaborate production design with the upside down room, the mirrored Escher stairs and forced perspective room are also highlights.
Several behind the scenes featurettes cover basic soundbites about getting the cast back together, introducing new cast and coming up with the third idea. Behind-the-scenes footage reveals a lot of the tricks to the magic from different angles so that’s fun.
Director Ruben Fleischer’s commentary with producer Bobby Cohen addresses ambiguities that play differently on second viewing, and practical production issues.
Deleted scenes show Merritt (Harrelson), Wilder (Franco) and Henley (Fisher) before they reunited. They’re not necessary but they serve as three mini episodes. There is a mini arc between Wilder and June (Greenblatt) that got truncated in the cut. An alternate ending delivers the same message but in a different setting with a different hologram cameo.
