DC/WB’s Suicide Squad is just a few months away. In Suicide Squad, a team of villains is put together by government official Amanda Waller to deal with a mysterious adversary. The film stars Jared Leto, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman, Karen Fukuhara and Viola Davis, with an appearance by Ben Affleck. In an interview with USAToday, writer and director David Ayer told the site a few details about the film and what it’s like to make a film that centers around the villains.
We all need good guys and everything — yay, good guys — but at the end of the day, they’re kinda boring. They’re always going to do the right thing. When you’re dealing with the baddies, it’s easy to get ahead of the audience and invert expectations.
When asked about Joker, Ayer replied:
Leto transcends being bad or even evil. He’s the king of Planet Joker.
Ayer on Affleck:
We made him fight. He’s awesome (as Batman). … You really sense that but for the grace of God he himself would be doing some really foul stuff out in the world.
Suicide Squad is set for release Aug.5.
