Little Monsters Blu-ray Steelbook Review: A Mature Look Back

Little Monsters was a movie I watched on video a lot. So how does it hold up more than 30 years later? The new Wal-Mart exclusive steelbook edition of the Blu-ray special edition gave me a chance to find out.

It is a lot more hyper than I remember, probably because as a kid it matched my intensity but now I’m a tired middle aged man. It handled the family issues well, with the parents discussing their issues and breaking the news to the kids.

The monster underworld is cluttered with plenty of production design to see in HD. It holds up in the dark, too.

Congressional candidate Ben Savage is adorable as Fred’s younger brother in real life and in the film.

Newish interviews with Howie Mandel, producer Andrew Licht and makeup effects artist Robert Short were filmed a few years ago for the Blu-ray edition. Mandel is both funny and informative, and the non comedians still have a lot of specifics to share.

They actually saved just under an hour of behind the scenes material from 1989 too.

The isolated score track also includes a 15 minute interview with composer David Newman who’s a major scorer we don’t often get to hear from. Jarret Gahan’s fan commentary has a lot of details on the differences between the script and the film. He’s also spoken to crew members to find out more.
