As of right now ‘The Expendables’ is at 29% over at Rotten Tomatoes.
In case You Missed It The First Time Here’s a review we posted a few months back!
I just got back from a special test screening of the new Sylvester Stallone movie THE EXPENDABLES. This was the type of screening where they tell you before the movie begins that the effects, sound and music are not finished and that when finished “the film will be perfect”.
Although I’m not an expert movie critic I thought I would send you guys a review. Hope you like it.
Now on to the film and keep in mind the movie was not a finished product….
The cast of THE EXPENDABLES is a fanboy’s wet dream. On paper its one of the greatest cast ever assembled for a testosterone driven 80’s style action movie. The list of actors in the film include Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews and more. Danny Trejo is credited on IMDB as being in the movie but I do not recall seeing him. Although THE EXPENDABLES is a good movie, the greatest cast ever does not necessarily equal the greatest movie ever in my opinion.
Most of the elements necessary to make a top notch action movie are in this film. Its bloody ( Not as bloody as Rambo), violent (Not as violent as Rambo ) and in classic Stallone fashion SHIT BLOWS UP! The film also provides some great fight scenes and choreography among the cast. limbs, necks, and many bones are broken throughout the movie. There is a very good fight between Randy Couture and Steve Austin that I think both UFC and WWF fans will be talking about for a while. Jet Li gets into it with Dolph Lundgren as well but the camera was to close to enjoy the action .
Worth the price of admission alone and the main reason people will be drown to this movie is for the opportunity to finally seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Sylvester Stallone on the big screen together. A very anticipated event for over thirty years this finally happened better late then never I guess . These three guys shared some dialogue among each other conclude by a funny one liner about Schwarzenegger becoming president. Unfortunately we may never see these guys in kicking ass action because they are way passed their prime. You will be shocked as I was as to how old and out of shape Schwarzenegger looked. There’s even a fat joke about him.
NOTE:Pay attention and listen for the Terminator theme music to play when Schwarzenegger appears.
The weakest link in the film by far was Dolph Lundgren’s performance. It was nice to see him team up again with Stallion but I really can’t tell if the guy is a bad actor or what. I cringed every time I saw him on screen because he seemed as if he was a bit punch drunk from the beating Rocky gave him in the fourth movie. His character is part of THE EXPENDABLES and he plays an unstable, crazy guy that becomes a traitor to the group and even tries to kill one of them. Yet at the end of the film they are all hanging out together as if nothing ever happen. I was like…WTF? And you will be too. The rest of the cast showed good chemistry among each other. I loved Mickey Rourke in this!
I was somewhat disappointed in a few other things such as there is really no explanation or history to The Expendables. Yes we know they are a group mercenaries for hire but what is there history? Why should we care about them? I would have liked to see more about that.
I definitely think the film is worth watching, but with such a great cast the film does not really offer anything different then any other action flick. Plus keep in mind after Rocky Balboa and the latest Rambo , expectations for this should be unfairly high. When you go to see this, Just remember a wise person once said “ keep your expectations in check”
I give it a 7 out of 10 with the potential of being an 8 because what I saw was a work in progress.
One last thing…People are wondering what the rating for this film will be. In my opinion it can easily be a PG-13.
