If it’s your dream to dream about Nicolas Cage, Dream Scenario is the movie for you. It is a surreal parable about fame, both the desired and unwanted kinds. Now on Blu-ray, it offers a bit more to explore at home.
The saturated 16mm film look of Dream Scenario is interesting in HD. It remains grainy which adds a bit to the surreality, especially since it’s rare in modern cinema.
A nine-minute behind-the-scenes feature includes Cage’s fascinating perspective on the film. A brief minute and a half of deleted scenes is just people staring at him and finding out there’s a protest on campus. Considering the commentary describes a wild dream sequence they cut, it’s a shame they did not include that.
Writer/director Kristoffer Borgli does give a full commentary. He is technical and practical, addressing reshoots due to focus issues and location wrangling. That’s how films are made and it’s not the glamorous part that’s usually discussed.
Borgli’s commentary is also sporadic. It’s only his second one and he admits he doesn’t like spelling things out, but he does it dutifully. He gets into the themes of dreams and common dreams people have. He also refers to Dream Scenario as a horror movie frequently.
