My Thoughts

I give Constantine: City of Demons The Movie a B.

Constantine: City of Demons The Movie continues the story that was streamed on the CW Seed earlier this year.

John Constantine is contacted by his childhood friend, Chas Chandler to help his daughter, Trish who has been in a coma.  To help find answers, Constantine summons a Nightmare Nurse, Asa and finds out that Trish’s soul cannot be found.  Asa is able to communicate with Trish briefly before a Demon takes over and gives them an address.  The duo travels to Los Angeles to face this demon and save Chas’s daughter.

I am a fan of the short-lived NBC series starring Matt Ryan.  So I was super thrilled when the CW Seed announced a new animated series.  I felt with animation they were able to do a lot more with the character than with the live-action series.

There are many things I liked about this film.  Matt Ryan’s portrayal of Constantine was on point.  It was as if he was able to pick up the character as if there was no break from the live-action series or the time he appeared on Arrow Season 4.  I like how this film went into more detail about Constantine’s past.  This gave us a more in-depth story about Astra (a girl we were introduced to in the live-action series).  It explains why Constantine keeps everyone at a distance.  Its true what he says, everything comes with a price (at least in his life).  Seeing some familiar sites in Los Angeles in animation form was pretty awesome as well.  I enjoyed the scene where Constantine faces the demon.  It really showed his abilities as a demon hunter using the dark arts.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed this film and loved seeing Matt Ryan reprising (or in this case, voicing) his role as John Constantine.  Though it’s an animated film, it’s definitely not a cartoon from your childhood.  Don’t forget to catch Matt Ryan reprising his role as Constantine yet again in Legends of Tomorrow Season 4  on The CW.
