Waifish television actress Calista Flockhart has landed the role of Cat Grant on CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series. Flockhart has been busy since her Ally McBeal days on numerous television series which include Web Therapy and Full Circle.
In the DC Comics, Cat Grant is a gossip columnist for the Daily Planet. She was introduced as a potential love interest for Clark Kent, her character added a new dimension to the Clark/Lois Lane/Superman dynamic. Flockhart will portray Grant as a former journalist turned “self-made media magnate” and founder of her own global media conglomerate CatCo.
This is not the first time the character has appeared on television. In the 1993-1997 series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Grant was portrayed by actress Tracy Scoggins in the first season. In Smallville, the character was played by two actresses: Emilie Ullerup played Cat Grant in the season nine episode entitled, “Crossfire,” while Keri Lynn Pratt became the new Cat Grant in a recurring role in season ten. It was eventually revealed that her character’s real name was Mary Louise Shroger, and that she changed her name to protect her son. Grant has been in a number of DC animated episodes and films.
The Supergirl series stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Laura Benanti as her mother Alura Zor-El, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen and Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant.
The project comes from Warner Bros. TV, studio-based Berlanti Productions and writer/executive producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler and is based on the characters from DC Comics.
For the series, Kara, who is 24, will embrace her powers and abilities and become the legendary female superhero.
