Insidious: Out of the Further came out in theaters at the end of August, but they brought it home in time for Halloween. It is a strong standalone entry in the saga focused on new characters. However, Elise (Lin Shaye) is still in The Further to help and some of the classic demons return.
The Insidious movies look even better at home in 4K than they do in theaters. All the dark spaces of The Further and shadowy corners of the house let 4K loose with pure deep Black space. Doorways lead to the dark, ominous halls. The Darkened Pittsburgh house Ingrid (Laura Gordon) wanders through into her daughter’s room from the void, then poor little Gemma (Charli Penton) walks through the dark house into the darkened kitchen.
Grown up Gemma (Amelia Eve) tries to sleep in the dark, looking under her daughter, Maya (Island Austin)’s bed. The infinite blanket fort surrounds Gemma with pitch black shadow. There is a bright contrast with her white dental office. But the Further finale and Nick (Brandon Berea) in the neighbor’s attic bring all the 4K darkness.
Sound is immersive too with all the whispers, cackling and echoes in The Further. Thunder also fills the room. Dust spills from creaky old houses behind you. The score stings in all five channels too.
Two short featurettes show the house on a soundstage so they crafted all the lighting, the dental contraption, the pillow fort. There’s a nice little montage of the Further entities too.
Seven deleted scenes include more pillow fort with some unfinished effects, more demons (on the street, a creepy kid in the house while Clare (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) babysits and some Cyrus (Sam Spruell) specific creepiness), and a basic shoe leather transition from place to place.
So for spooky season, or if you’re reading this later, Insidious: Out of the Further is a strong, creepy horror movie for home viewing.
