Maggie Gyllenhaal’s take on The Bride of Frankenstein probably should’ve been released in October. Its celebration of monsters rebelling against society would’ve been a nice Halloween movie, and that’s closer to awards season anyway. Alas, it came out early and now we have it on 4K UHD.
It is a shame this does not use the IMAX version since that open frame footage exists. And it’s unlikely that version will be shown again so it was a limited run for the people who caught it in March.
Nevertheless, the widescreen 4K shows the vivid recreation of the 1930s, with plenty of dark alleys and night shadows the Bride (Jessie Buckley) and Frankenstein (Christian Bale) navigate. Mary Shelley (also Buckley) appears in a black and white void.
Four bonus features total about 30 minutes going behind the scenes of the adaptation, the makeup, the fashion and Jake Gyllenhaal’s dance numbers. They all keep cutting back to Maggie, Buckley and Bale sitting together at a table, with others giving single interviews.
