Osgood Perkins’ single-location horror Keeper looks great on 4K. Since it is all set in an isolated house, the wood-paneled home is bright and vivid during the day. Then it becomes a prison for Liz (Tatiana Maslany).
When she does explore the surrounding nature in the woods and stream, it is National Geographic quality. But the film displays real darkness in the night. Several shots show Maslany or Rossif Sutherland enveloped in pure dark.
It’s a subtle sound mix, mostly ambient nature with minimal jump scares. It really lets the horror creep up on you rather than going in your face, but there are some in your face scenes too.
Perkins gives a subdued commentary, explaining which shots were stolen from other moments, how they found the house and simple visual effects you wouldn’t expect. He’s humble about correcting his own mistakes.
The 4K UHD makes an ideal collection for this intimate two-hander. One other couple occasionally stops by, but it’s really about Liz stranded and learning why she was chosen for this.
