Weapons 4K UHD Review: 4K at 2:17

Weapons was a summer horror phenomenon. This is one case where it’s good they got it on home video quickly, in time for Halloween. And if you haven’t had it spoiled yet, watch it as soon as possible before someone does. It is an ensemble horror film that unfolds more and more of the story with each character it follows through the same course of events.

It is a shame that the 4K UHD is only the widescreen 2.35:1 edition since there was an IMAX version in theaters. The picture is still as sharp and detailed in widescreen, but they are leaving some frame on the table.

There is plenty of deep, dark night in high dynamic range, from the haunting 2:17 a.m. incident to all the dark bedrooms and basements. Pools of blood are darker than crimson and the bile the weapons spit is pure black.

Surround sound is mainly score inflections and subtle wooshes, complementing camera moves. There are thuds and rumbles in the subwoofer.

Extras are still trying not to spoil anything, so they explain as much of the construction of the film as possible, vaguely. 9-year-old Cary Christopher’s interviews go deeper than his adult costars. The makeup and visual effects teams get a bit more specific about the gore.
