Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning 4K UHD Review: IM4K

IMAX sequences already improves Blu-rays so having 4K movies with IMAX scenes is even better. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has two standout IMAX scenes.

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise)’s deep sea dive shows all the shades of dark blue, but only in the light of his helmet. The rest is a deep void or silhouette. Inside the sub too, all the dark corridors.

Of course, the yellow and red prop planes flying over South Africa coast look bright and vivid. Also when Ethan goes into the Entity, it is all a void around Ethan eyes. Widescreen shots are magnificent too on the aircraft carrier at sea and the arctic snowscape.

Surround sound envelops too with the entity’s voice echoing and sparking around Ethan, and bullets ricocheting in the caves.

Bonus features include Brief explorations of sequences totaling 17 minutes. McQ got on the plane to test and revise previs. They built water tanks to spec and directed with hand signals.

Deleted footage includes an alternate Marie scene and dog sled action. There’s no dialogue sound though.  Long raw takes of the Olifants River Canyon flight are extraordinary.

Two commentaries have some overlap. Whether McQ with Cruise or McQ with editor Eddie Hamiolton and First A.D. Mary Boulding, both discuss the structuring of the film and refer to exposition as the vegetables. McQ’s take on the Rabbit’s Foot, Jim Phelps and Donloe for a better reason than fan service.

It is cunny when they talk about cutting scenes shorter when the movie is still still close to three hours, but Cruise has a definitive take on the ideal length for a movie. It can be as long as it’s still entertaining and not a second longer!
