This new steelbook edition of Wind River is my first chance to see the film on 4K UHD. I saw it at the Sundance Film Festival but this feels like it brings me even closer to the snowy wilderness, and I was in the snowy mountains the first time.
The bright white snow coats the entire film, and you can see every flake in the flurry. The wilderness is beautiful, making the violence all the more ugly.
The wind does indeed surround you in Atmos. Gunshots ring out, echoing in the wilderness too.
The enclosed Blu-ray has two deleted scenes and 10 minutes of bonus features with the cast and Taylor Sheridan. One deleted scene shows Cory (Jeremy Renner) delivering his score we previously saw him hunt. More interestingly, Jane (Elizabeth Olsen) has a rather hostile encounter with the clerk checking her in to her hotel. 10 minutes isn’t a lot to delve into the themes of the film shows the cast and filmmakers thought about them.
