While musicals are big again, Shout! Studios has released The Who rock opera Tommy on 4K UHD. This 1975 musical is especially interesting. Because there is no spoken dialogue, where songs can’t explain they have to show visually.
Those visuals are exemplary on 4K. It begins with the glowing sun and wartorn fire. The film is full of bright primary colors from a yellow house to blue stairs and bedroom. You always see the film grain.
The staging of the film is a marvel. There were no green screens back then so everything had to be staged in front of the camera. So there is a full parade of multicolored streamers outside a hospital window.
There are no bonus features, but the music sounds great in stereo.
