THUNDERBOLTS* REBRANDS AS “THE NEW AVENGERS” AFTER UNDERWHELMING 1st WEEKEND DEBUT

Thunderbolts* posted a solid global launch, that unfortunately, was well below projections… but that being said, its strong audience reception has raised Marvel’s hopes for possible long-term success. Even though the movie opened 20+ million dollars LESS than ‘Captain America: Brave New World’. Which was not a financial box office success. Failing to reach the film’s breakeven point.

So why the name change now? There was always the Asterix after the title, which indicated that a name change was possible. But did they plan to do it this soon? After only three days in theaters? Spoiling a major film plot point? Or is this a ‘Hail Mary’ play to get more butts in seats? Because that’s what it feels like.

I saw the movie Sunday night, and I enjoyed it, giving it a solid 7 out of 10. But that was for a Thunderbolts movie, about a group of lesser known characters overcoming their inner demons and becoming a team.  But it didn’t feel like a big AVENGERS movie to me. So will this new name change strategy work against them? Raising expectations to a level that the film doesn’t deliver on?

ONLY TIME WILL TELL…
