The Nightmare Before Christmas 4K UHD Review: What’s This? In 4K?

Stop motion animation already looked unreal on Blu-ray. 4K brings you exponentially closer to the sets. The Nightmare Before Christmas came out in August, but of course I’m going to wait until Halloween month to watch and review it.

The pure black intro to Halloweentown introduces the characters in a black void. The sky still black on the Halloweentown set. The glowing red of Christmastown provides a stark contrast.

The detail of every set and puppet is even bigger on a 77” 4K TV. I know it was in theaters on 35mm, but home video keeps improving. The carved lines for texture are sharp. You can see the leather stretch on Dr. Finkelstein’s wheelchair. The hardwood floor panels have knots like real wood. Concrete bricks have bubbles even though it’s actually foam.

Surround sound effects include the wind blowing, autumn leaves rustling and Christmas bells jingling in the rear. Zero barks behind you too. Dr. Finkelstein motors from right to left and Oogie Boogie’s contraption whirrs all around.

The Blu-ray release is included with all the extensive extras it includes too, and you can listen to the commentaries on the 4K.
