The black and white version of The Mist is the one writer/director Frank Darabont prefers, and it is the ideal one to watch on the new 4K UHD. The contrast is apparent even in the supermarket aisles.
In the back room, the shadows are pure black. Outside, the pure white mist whips and wafts. The shapes of creatures in the mist are more distinct in black and white.
Blood is also black like in Hitchcock’s Psycho while fire burns pure white. Then at night, the whole store turns pitch black like the back room.
In the color version, you see a bit more grain. The aftermath of the storm looks wet and dewey, but the supermarket can’t compare to the stark black and white.
Surround sound mostly kicks in when mist bugs flutter around the store.
The collection includes all the bonus features from the Blu-ray but you can listen to commentary on the 4K editions.
