Actress Laura Benanti (Nashville) has been cast in a key recurring role for the CBS Supergirl pilot. Benanti will play noblewoman Alura Zor-El, who is the mother of Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) a.k.a. Supergirl. Alura Zor-El will assist Kara across time and space in her journey on becoming Supergirl.
The project comes from Warner Bros. TV, studio-based Berlanti Productions and writer/executive producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler and is based on the characters from DC Comics. Although born before her cousin Kal-El (Superman,) Kara escaped from Krypton before its destruction and journeyed to Earth on a longer trajectory than her super relation, which is why she is younger. For the series, Kara, who is 24, will embrace her powers and abilities and become the legendary female superhero.
As far as Alura Zor-El is concerned, her story follows a different path. Alura and the people of Argo City survived the destruction of Krypton. Sensing the utilization of his force field technology, Brainiac returned and integrated those individuals who he deemed valuable into the bottle city of Kandor.
Besides appearing on Nashville, Benanti has won a Tony award and has had roles on Nurse Jackie, Law & Order: SVU, Royal Pains and Go On.
