Yesterday the final day of Star Wars Celebration kicked off with a bang, Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank were scheduled to have a panel to talk about their new Star Wars films coming out in the following years. Unfortunately Trank was feeling under the weather and couldn’t attend the panel but Edwards did not disappoint as he brought an exclusive teaser trailer for his upcoming Star Wars film, Rogue One. Then the director gave us some inside tidbits in the upcoming film.
The spinoffs should be referred as anthology films.
These were initially George Lucas‘ idea, he wanted to explore the stories that took place in the vast Star Wars universe. The stand-alone films introduce new characters and places.
Rogue One takes place between Episode III and Episode IV, but Edwards said that it would lean towards episode IV since it is his favorite film.
The official synopsis and story follows: “A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans.”
One of the interesting elements of the film is that there are almost no Jedi.
Rogue One takes place in a time when the Jedi are all but extinct and a group of people without magical powers must step up to save the galaxy.
Rogue One is set in the same time period as Star Wars Rebels, and while a cross over hasn’t been confirmed, they are definitely aware of the potential.
Fitting into that idea, the creative team they announced has a lot of experience on war genre films . Director of Photography Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty), VFX supervisor Neil Corblud (Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan). Neil Lamont and Doug Chiang are production designers.
This will be a war picture since “it is called Star WARS” as Edwards said.
