From Dark Horse Comics, comes a very uniquely awesome book called “Popular Skullture: The Skull Motif in Pulps, Paperback, and Comics.” Yeah, that’s a very lengthy title but it’s also a lengthy book as well.
Popular Skullture is a huge collection of 1930’s to mid ’50s art which was featured on various pulps, paperbacks and comics. The art comes from numerous artist such as Bill Everett, Matt Baker, Norm Saunders, Wally Wood and many, many more.
Looking through this book, it feels like you’re being taken through a time machine of great art. Each page of art stands out in its own unique way. Whether it’s the art style, the colors, the goriness or the creepiness, every page jumps out at you and it’s amazing.
I see this book as a great book to have laying on your coffee table for a conversation piece or even a great gift to give to a friend that love skulls, spiders and gothic art. I know quite a few people that would love this book. It definitely takes you to a different time period and with it being a 160 page book, you will definitely get your money’s worth.
Here are a few examples of what you’ll see in the book. Go get it Wednesday at your local comic shop.
