I recently saw Point Break again on film at the New Beverly Cinema so I can confirm this 4K UHD is an authentic transfer. That’s exactly how it looked on the big screen.
Film grain adds grit all over Keanu Reeves’ young face, with hazy smoke and sweat. The sunny California coast and midair sky dives will brighten up any living room at any hour of the night.
Dawn and dusk shots are framed with striking silhouettes. Night surfing boats a cool blue. Some standout colors include the bank woman’s red shirt and Reeves’ pink surfboard. When Patrick Swayze turns a gas pump into a flame thrower, the golden flames glow.
There are some deep 4K shadows in the meth house and Johnny Utah (Reeves)’s home in the early morning.
Waves and gunshots rumble, though don’t do much with the rear speakers. A few car chase effects reach the rear, and the surfing scenes wait for the 50 year storm to finally crash behind you.
The Blu-ray includes previously released additional scenes and featurettes, but it’s the 4K transfer that’s the highlight of this release.
