Deadline Hollywood reports that Marvel Studios has tapped “Candyman” director Nia DaCosta to helm “Captain Marvel 2” starring Brie Larson.

From Deadline, “DaCosta takes over for Anne Bowden and Ryan Fleck, who directed the first pic to massive box office success. Marvel is known for switching up its directors on its popular franchises like Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America to give the next installment a fresh voice, and had been meeting with candidates for the past couple of months.”

The “Captain Marvel” sequel is being written by screenwriter Megan McDonnell, who worked previously as story editor on the Marvel/Disney+ series, “WandaVision.” The first “Captain Marvel” opened in March 2019 and grossed an estimated $1.13 billion worldwide.

DaCosta is known for directing the critically-acclaimed 2018 indie, “Little Woods”, starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James. Director Jordan Peele took notice to DaCosta’s directing skills in “Little Woods” and tapped her to direct the “Candyman” reboot, in which Peele is producing.
