Variety has reported that after Tom Cruise stepped down from Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. film that Henry Cavill, the new Man of Steel, is in talks with Warner Bros. Studio to take the part. Ritchie is director of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011). The original series ran from 1964 to 1968. It starred Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo (uncle to Han), an agent of the United Network Command for Law Enforcement (and you though S.H.I.E.L.D. had a long acronym). He was paired up with a Russian agent, Ilya Kuryakin, played by David McCallum.
Armie Hammer, soon to be the Lone Ranger, is set to play Illya Kuryakin. The original seris featured scripts by Robert Towne, “The Dove Affair” (1964) and Harlan Ellison, two episodes in 1966 and 1967. U.N.C.L.E.’s adversary is the organization called THRUSH. A spin off series, the Girl from U.N.C.L.E. (1966-1967) starred Stephanie Powers as April Dancer. One of the last appearances of Vaughn and McCallum was in the tv film, The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Fifteen Years Later Affair (1983). Cavill appears in Man of Steel on June 14th. Hammer becomes The Lone Ranger on July 3rd.
