Today, publisher Athlon Games, which makes games for PC and console, announced today that they have has signed a long-term licensing agreement with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop and publish a video game based on The Lord of the Rings.

Dave Miller, president at Athlon Games, had this to say in a press release:

“It’s a singular opportunity to work closely with Middle-earth Enterprises to create a completely new experience for fans of the landmark fantasy work of J.R.R. Tolkien, and we are excited about the resurgence of interest in The Lord of the Rings IP,”

“This, along with several other major properties Athlon is working with, will help us to further our goal of creating AAA co-operative console and PC experiences that gamers will want to play for years to come.”

Although the press release mentioned consoles, they didn’t specifically say what The Lord of the Rings would come out on, but I think it’s safe to assume that PS4 and Xbox One are definitely in their plans.

This will be the second The Lord of the Rings online game with The Lord of the Rings Online launching in 2007, with the game’s license being renewed, and still on-going to this day.
