LAST FLAG FLYING Blu-ray Review

Last Flag Flying Blu-ray

The Movie

Synopsis

In 2003, thirty years after they served together in the Vietnam War, former Navy Corps medic Larry “Doc” Shepherd (Steve Carell) reunites with former marines Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston), and Reverend Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) on a different type of mission: burying Doc’s son, a young marine killed in the Iraq War. Doc decides to forgo burial at Arlington National Cemetery and, with the help of his buddies, takes the casket on a bittersweet trip up the East Coast to his home in suburban New Hampshire.  Along the way, Doc, Sal, and Mueller reminisce and come to terms with shared memories of the war that continues to shape their lives.

My Thoughts

I give the Last Flag Flying Blu-ray a B.

My first impression of this blu-ray is this film is a simple story of friendship and coming to terms with your past. I got the sense that Sheperd, Nealon, and Mueller were really close and had known each other for a long time but something or just maybe even life had separated them.

I felt for Larry ‘Doc’ Sheperd (Steve Carell) throughout the film.  The Military basically lied to him about how his son was killed.  He told them I’m taking my son and he will be buried in his hometown.  He didn’t want anything to do with the military and I don’t blame him.   He is accompanied on this journey by Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston) and Reverend Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne).  Friends back in the day during the time they served in Vietnam.

I like the rediscovering of friendship among the characters.  Unfortunately, it took the death of Shepard’s Son to bring them together but it made their friendship stronger. They also came to terms with a situation that occurred when they served in Vietnam.

Catch Last Flag Flying out on Blu-ray & Digital January 30, 2018.
