Scream Factory upgraded George Romero’s big studio Land of the Dead to 4K UHD even before his landmark ‘70s and ‘80s sequels. Night of the Living Dead is of course on Criterion Collection 4K UHD, and there’s still Land and Survival out there.
This nearly 20-year-old film is still a contemporary studio movie and looks as professional as one would expect. The most contrast you’ll see is in the black and white Universal logo Romero used to open the film.
Plenty of Land of the Dead takes place at night, but it’s also very lit up and smoky, so it’s rare you’ll see deep pockets of shadow. The zombies in the river remain a striking image, as are seeing the empty streets in stark daylight.
Surround sound also complements the fireworks distracting the zombies and heavy artillery fire of this entry.
Scream Factory did a collector’s edition a few years ago and this is my first time seeing those extras. John Leguizamo gets political about George W. Bush during the making of the film, and still relates it to Trump when the interviews were filmed. Robert Joy, Pedro Miguel Arce and several zombie actors get the career interview treatment.
I do remember the original Universal DVD extras including Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s cameo, and those are still included too.
