Hugh Jackman has said numerous and countless times that he would want to play Wolverine on the big screen for years to come and many have wondered when Jackman would hang the claws up and pass the mantle to someone new but, in a recent interview with Cigar Aficionado the actor says after seeing Michael Keaton in Birdman he isn’t ready to give up the claws just yet.
“I said to my wife, The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine. I’ve got to find a way to keep playing him until I die. I know that someday they’ll recast the role with another actor…I’d be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic.”
Even though he’s done an exceptional job portraying the character, Jackman says there’s still room and will always be room to improve the role.
“I always want to be in better shape than I was for the last one. I don’t believe in stagnation. People say they try to maintain the status quo. But I believe the natural cycle means you’re either advancing and getting closer to something or you’re receding. Every time I play Wolverine I want to go further, physically and emotionally.”
I’m fine with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine until he finally says he’s finished but, he knows just as Robert Downey Jr. for Iron Man, that they can play the role for a long time due to the fans. I would love to see an old man Logan film to send the character off but I don’t think we have to worry about re-casting anytime soon. Hugh Jackman will be seen next in Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie on March 6, 2015
