I give Hakyu Hoshin Engi a C.
Hakyu Hoshin Engi is a very mixed bag.
Based on the manga Hoshin Engi, the anime follows Taikoubou a slacker that eventually has the weight of the world thrusted onto his shoulders. The anime itself is not as great as one would hope from the classic source material but it does a few things right. Some battle sequences made me feel like I was reliving some childhood memory of sitting by the tv as a young lad watching Yu Yu Hakusho often confused by the multiple characters and storylines but as I watched this as a big boy I realized that this show is confusing in a less charming way.
The art feels like a remnant of the aforementioned Yu Yu Hakushos and Card Captor Sakuras of the past and some of the character designs do feel pretty well done to convey that feeling but in the end of the day its all flash not too much substance.
If this package were, say, $10 less I’d say it’s a good deal but all in all you are walking into a blu-ray for an anime that has a lot of potential but often misses more hits than it lands.
