It’s been over a year since Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” invaded theaters. Studio 20th Century Fox and Ridley Scott’s production company Scott Free are eyeing Jack Paglen (“Transcendence”) to write the sequel to “Prometheus.”

“Prometheus” was designed to be a prequel to Scott’s 1979 “Alien” science fiction/horror film. The script for “Prometheus” was written by Jon Spaihts. After “Lost” writer/producer Damon Lindelof came on board, he took over and rewrote most of the script. The film was considered a disappointment by fans, who had high expectations and wanted answers to questions that have been milling around for more than 30 years. Instead, there were more questions than answers. Even though critically panned, the film with a reported budget of $130 million, took in a worldwide gross of $403 million. So, make room for a sequel.

If Fox green lights the project, this will reunite actors Noomi Rapace as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and Michael Fassbender as the android David. The last action Dr. Shaw and David took was a trip to the Engineer’s homeworld in hopes of finding answers to the origin of the human race. At this time, the creative direction of the sequel has not been defined. In essence, expect more news and teasing to come out of Fox and Scott.

Caliburn24 here at the Fortress of Solitude.

Mark Waid posted a review of Man of Steel on the Thrillbent website. He is of course a comic book writer on such limited series as Kingdom Come (with Alex Ross) and Superman: Birthright (with Leinil Francis Yu). Waid is currently writing Daredevil with artist Chris Samnee.

He begins with a short review: “Non-spoiler review: It’s not for me. It had some very nice moments, several I wish I’d written (and at least three I did, I’m proud to say–there was lots of BIRTHRIGHT in it), but I can’t imagine wanting to watch it again anytime soon. YMMV. It’s a good science-fiction movie, but it’s very cold. It’s not a very satisfying super-hero movie. That said, if your favorite part of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE was Superman standing in the Fortress while Jor-El lectured him, you’re gonna love MAN OF STEEL.”

Waid continues with the parts of the film he liked and the parts that showed their Superman: Birthright origins: “And I genuinely enjoyed the first two-thirds or so of the movie. Krypton was great. Zod was great. Really, there was a lot to like there. And I got my first of many proud-papa BIRTHRIGHT glows when we cut straight from the rocket’s entry to Clark as an adult, and I grinned like an idiot at the many, many other BIRTHRIGHT moments. I can’t really describe for you what it feels like to me to see evidence that I really have been lucky enough to add a few lasting elements to the Superman myth.”

The spoilers really come into the next part and where Waid shows his frustration with the film, “And then we got to The Battle of Metropolis, and I truly, genuinely started to feel nauseous at all the Disaster Porn. Minute after minute after endless minute of Some Giant Machine laying so much waste to Metropolis that it’s inconceivable that we weren’t watching millions of people die in every single shot. And what’s Superman doing while all this is going on? He’s halfway around the world, fighting an identical machine but with no one around to be directly threatened, so it’s only slightly less noticeable that thousands of innocents per second are dying gruesomely on his watch. Seriously, back in Metropolis, entire skyscrapers are toppling in slo-mo and the city is a smoking, gray ruin for miles in every direction, it’s Hiroshima, and Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich are somewhere muttering `Too far, man, too far’…but, you know, Superman buys the humans enough time to sacrifice many, many of their own lives to bomb the Giant Machine themselves and even makes it back to Metropolis in time to catch Lois from falling (again), so…yay?”

The big spoiler comes with Waid’s greatest disappointment with the film, “Superman wins by killing Zod. By snapping his neck. And as this moment was building, as Zod was out of control and Superman was (for the first time since the fishing boat 90 minutes ago) struggling to actually save innocent victims instead of casually catching them in mid-plummet, some crazy guy in front of us was muttering “Don’t do it…don’t do it…DON’T DO IT…” and then Superman snapped Zod’s neck and that guy stood up and said in a very loud voice, “THAT’S IT, YOU LOST ME, I’M OUT,” and his girlfriend had to literally pull him back into his seat and keep him from walking out and that crazy guy was me. That crazy guy was me, and I barely even remember doing that, I had to be told afterward that I’d done that, that’s how caught up in betrayal I felt. And after the neck-snapping, even though I stuck it out, I didn’t give a damn about the rest of the movie.” Waid brings up some excellent points on the film that pulled in a $125 million box office.

Brad Pitt Can Save Me Anytime
By David Nieves

After all the controversy and challenges, World War Z the movie is finally here. Director Marc Forster takes the zombie movie genre out of the barn house and makes it explode on the world stage. What could have been a recipe for disaster turns out to be new direction for zombie filmmaking.Though certainly not without its flaws, WWZ is a welcomed addition to the great Summer blockbusters we’ve already seen this year.

The illustrious Brad Pitt plays retired United Nations investigator supreme Gerry Lane. Who suddenly finds himself back in action due to all hell breaking loose on Earth. Pitt’s character is tasked with finding the cause of the zombie outbreak. That mission puts him on a hero’s journey, which takes him to several countries and puts him in the jaws of danger from opening to finish. All the while his left behind family’s well-being depends on him staying alive and finding patient zero.

This film’s production problems have been well documented. Some issues are more apparent than others when you watch the film. Obviously the original book can’t be adapted word-for-word because of its lack of main character and episodic narrative. However, the story written here easily feels as though it could be told in the world of the Brooks novels. World War Z’s narrative is predominately plot driven which is a bit of a shame because Brad Pitt gives a solid performance supported by good supporting actors, who ultimately end up playing set piece characters. No real characterization is found in the movie to really make me want to care about our protagonist. World War Z rarely plays up the protective father dynamic of Pitt’s character. In a way the film does the opposite of The Walking Dead TV show by putting the danger front and center for Gerry to deal with instead of making it subservient to the characters. The controversial third act of the film doesn’t fall flat; it simply ends prematurely but leaves the franchise in a good place to tell future stories. Perhaps its biggest crutch will agitate diehard fans of the horror genre the most, which is the film’s lack of gore. In place of R rated sights, we see a lot of fast pace cutting to create a sense of gratuitous violence you’d expect from a zombie movie.

Where World War Z succeeds is in the chances it takes. For having a PG-13 rating we get big budget epic action that helps to give the story a larger than life feel. The film however doesn’t sacrifice the intimate tension you’d expect from horror movies. One particular showcase of that is the hallway scene with Pitt and his on screen family trying to get to the roof of an apartment building. The film actually does a great job in creating the sense of danger and dread lacking from most of the films in modern horror cinema. In early trailers the CG of the zombie waves looked a bit cheesy. I’m happy to say the final product came in far more polished and kept pace with the break-neck action cinematography going on.

Ultimately World War Z feels like a well stitched together mini-series with its easily distinguishable episodes. It blends the zombie movie with the global action thriller in a way that simply just works. While it falls a bit short of the game changer Paramount Pictures was looking for, it is a solid enjoyable time at the movies that breathes new life in to a beaten to death style of film.

Disney’s new animated film “Frozen” has made star Kristen Bell’s dreams of portraying a Disney character in some form or another come true. She will be providing the voice for the klutzy, but true-hearted Anna. She had this say about her lifelong ambition.

“Since I was 4 years old, I dreamed of being in a Disney animated film,” Bell says. “It was the first goal I ever set for myself. It seemed like it would be a very unrealistic one.”

In “Frozen,” fearless optimist Anna (voice of ‘Kristen Bell’ ) teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of ‘Jonathan Groff’ ) and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel,) whose icy powers have trapped the land of Arendelle in eternal winter. Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom. The story is based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale.

“Anna is the sibling who doesn’t normally get that much attention and is used to kind of just spazzing out on her own,” Bell says. “But she’s forced into a position where her sister needs her, and she has to step up to the plate.”

Bell approached directors Chris Buck (“Surf’s Up,” “Tarzan”) and Jennifer Lee (a screenwriter on “Wreck-It Ralph”) about how to play her character.

“She’s not a good fighter, she doesn’t have good posture, she’s not very elegant, and she’s constantly putting her foot in her mouth,” she says. “But she’s a good person and she’s utterly determined.”

“She doesn’t have any superpowers,” adds Lee. “But Anna is one of these ordinary people doing an extraordinary thing.”

As far as a romantic angle is concerned, “Frozen” has that element as well in the charming character of Prince Hans (Santino Fontana.)

“He’s the more Disney-type of guy,” says Bell, who elaborates about Anna developing a fondness for the rugged Kristoff. First, and foremost though, the film focuses on the relationship between sisters Anna and Elsa.

“That’s such an important part of this,” Lee says. “Two sisters torn apart by a big family secret.”

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ animators sojourned to Norway to see the winter there up close and personal in order to incorporate the look into the 3-D-enhanced scenery of the film. Director Chris Buck said he had “a blast” re-creating the beauty on-screen.

“The light is amazing, the way it refracts and dances off the snow and ice,” Buck says. “We’re still working on the film, but what we have seen is stunning.”

The music for “Frozen” was composed by “The Book of Mormon’s” Robert Lopez with lyrics from his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, which are performed by top Broadway stars. Bell sang alongside stage veteran Idina Menzel, a situation she found “terrifying.”

“It’s like getting on a bike path with Lance Armstrong,” Bell says. “She’s one of the best singers on the planet.”

Unscathed, Bell came through the process refreshed. She says her role is something that Lincoln, her newborn daughter with Dax Shepard, will be proud of one day.

“Now that I have a little girl, she’s going to be able to see me voice this character, and that’s a special part of the process for me,” Bell says. “She won’t know for a very long time, but when that time comes, she’ll be as excited as I am now.”

“Frozen” will arrive for the winter holidays on November 27. The film stars the voice talents of Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Tom Kane, Santino Fontana, Eva Bella, and Livvy Stubenrauch. Jennifer Lee and Shane Morris wrote the screenplay based on the fairy tale “The Snow Queen” by Hans Christian Andersen. Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee direct.

by David Nieves June 17, 2013

Ever since the PlayStation 3′s Killzone 2 debuted, I’ve been hesitant of playing anymore of the series. While the games have been solid, they’ve also suffered from the same monotone visuals that never highlighted the power of the system to its full potential. Now, Sony-owned Guerrilla Games is out to redline the beast of an engine in the Playstation 4 with Killzone: Shadow Fall.

In a behind closed doors session Guerrilla showed how they intend to take the blockbuster experiences of the past and turn them on their head. The studio is crafting a deeper and more tactical experience. They’ve taken the checklist out of linear game play with objectives in each map that can be completed in any order you choose. The game really feels as though you have to combine brain and brawn. In the demo map, players had to disable enemy alarms, destroy anti-aircraft guns, and take out sniper nest before making their escape. Except for the exit the objectives could be completed in any order.

The setting is just as vivid and bright as we saw in the February debut but that sense of bleak despair is not lost in the transition. Gamers are still playing through as the ISA from previous games. Killzone: Shadow Fall takes place three decades after the events of Killzone 3. Planet Helghan has been destroyed, stranding the Helghast and forcing them onto Vekta, a planet occupied by the ISA. Separating the planet down the middle is a crude iron curtain like wall.

Shadow Fall is far more complex than the average shooter with layer after layer of rich gameplay experience. There is a lot to keep track of if you don’t have the traditional opening tutorial to help you. Players have the standard two weapon switch but you also have control of an all-new device called OWL. OWL is absolutely essential in Shadow Fall, and if you don’t know how to use it effectively you’ll quickly be victimized by the game’s challenging A.I.

OWL makes effective use of the DualShock 4′s touch pad. By swiping the touch pad in different direction, specific skills can be used such as a shield or zipline, and a few others that haven’t been announced. The zipline however was a lot of fun to play with and the player can traverse 50 meters of in game level at a time.

Unfortunately, I never got to take a look at any of Shadow Fall’s cinematics apart from what’s already available on the PlayStation website or Youtube. The narrative of Killzone hasn’t always been as engaging as it could be but I’ve always felt there’s been a lot of potential for story to compliment the gorgeous look and hopefully Shadow Fall is that perfect pairing.

Should you go out and preorder Killzone: Shadow Fall? It’s still early to tell but the games approach to strategy and mechanics really look to set it apart from every first person shooter this year. Guerrilla Games is taking risks and have definitely put this game on everyone’s radar. We can’t wait to see the finish product when it launches with the PS4 later this year.

Tyson is a baby Cyclops and Percy’s half brother. Tyson possesses great strength, and is always tinkering with metals, gears and tools. He’s great at creating useful things with his metalworking ability. For example, during his first summer at Camp-Half Blood, a camp for demi-gods, Tyson makes Percy a shield with images of their adventures engraved on it; it retracts into a watch when not deployed. When not at Camp-Half Blood, Tyson works with his father, Poseidon, underwater at a forge making weapons. Tyson has immunity to fire, which protects him from magical flaming cannon balls that can burn anyone else to cinders.
