Director Chris McKay has signed on to helm the “DUNGEONS & DRAGONS” reboot for Paramount Pictures and Hasbro. Michael Gillio will be writing the screenplay based on the popular role-playing game. Hasbro’s own Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis are producing the “DUNGEONS & DRAGONS” film under their new production company, Allspark Pictures, which aims to produce film and television projects based on Hasbro’s toys and games.
McKay, who also directed “THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE”, was developing a “NIGHTWING” spin-off film for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. The film would’ve featured Batman’s first Robin, Dick Grayson, who ventures out into a new city to begin a solo career under the new name of Nightwing. Inside sources revealed that “NIGHTWING” was not a “top priority” for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment hence why McKay signed on to direct “DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS”, which will more than likely be his next feature.
The “DUNGEONS & DRAGONS” film was put on hold a few years back back due to a lawsuit between Sweetpea Entertainment and Hasbro about who owned the rights to the Dungeons and Dragons property which delayed all development on the film. Once the settlement with Sweetpea Entertainment was finalized in 2015, Hasbro moved “DUNGEONS & DRAGONS” from Warner Bros. Pictures to Paramount Pictures, which is where Hasbro houses the “TRANSFORMERS” and “G.I. JOE” franchises.
Hasbro’s current line of toys and games include Transformers, G.I. Joe, Mr. Potato Head, Battleship, Monopoly, Ouija and My Little Pony. Hasbro’s products have already been adapted into feature-length films over the years which include the highly-successful “TRANSFORMERS” films, two “G.I. JOE” films, two “OUIJA” films, a “BATTLESHIP” movie and an animated “MY LITTLE PONY” film
Paramount Pictures and Hasbro currently have five upcoming films which include the “TRANSFORMERS” spinoff, “BUMBLEBEE”, which has a Dec. 21st, 2018 release date. The other four include a new “G.I. JOE” film (March 27th, 2020), “MICRONAUTS” (Oct. 16th, 2020), “DUNGEONS & DRAGONS” (JULY 23rd, 2021), and an untitled “PARAMOUNT/HASBRO EVENT FILM” (Oct. 1st, 2021).
